The Safe Routes Ambassadors had quite a successful year! Highlights include:
-A fantastic Walk and Bike to School Day event at Hayt School on October 6th, 2010, in partnership with Safe Kids Chicago.
-19 Crossing Guards honored for Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on May 3, 2011. All of these Crossing Guards were nominated by community members and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Safe Routes Ambassadors, most of which were hand-delivered!
-Over 100 schools visited, nearly 11,000 students reached with pedestrian and bicycle safety skills training.
-Over 50% of those students received a second visit from the Safe Routes Ambassadors. Second graders had the opportunity to practice those safety skills by going on a neighborhood safety walk, and fifth graders had the chance to expand their knowledge about traffic safety through an outdoor experiment and a discussion about speed limits!
-”Drive Safe! School Zone” signs distributed to 15 schools to help bring extra awareness to drivers around schools (email chelsea.richer@cityofchicago.org to request these signs for your school!)
We are looking forward to the 2011-2012 school year! Stay tuned for more information on how to request the Ambassadors and for news about new programming options for next year!
